Vienna has many grocery stores - but most all are controlled by large entities that are corporately minded and driven by margin. Trader Joe's philosophy is quite different in that it focuses on better ingredients, pays attention to the needs of its customers, and is responsible.
Media in Northern Virginia has made it known that the Magruders grocery store (located at 180 Maple Ave. West, Vienna, VA) will be closing within the next week or so. This leaves the town of Vienna with two large grocery stores (Giant and Wholefoods) and one large "specialty" grocer - the Fresh Market.
While there are two Trader Joe's locations within 5 miles of the Magruders location (one in Pimmit Hills and one in Fairfax City), both are difficult to reach by car owing to congestion and many are impossible to reach for those Vienna residents who traditionally walked to Magruders.
Given the demographics of the Town of Vienna (and surrounding unincorporated area), the fact that Trader Joe's has locations within close proximity to each other in California and other states, and the fact that Vienna truly needs variety in its shopping opportunities, we believe that the management of Trader Joe's should strongly consider adding a store in Vienna, VA - at the location to be vacated by Magruders.
