The Issue

On October 6th, Tom Poholsky was found dead in a Dallas hotel while on vacation. He was the assistant coach of the Evergreen High School football team for 3 years, and his son, Tommy, was the starring quarterback on the team. Shortly after Tom's tragic passing, the team's first conference game was held on October 11th. What was supposed to be a night to honor their fallen coach and celebrate his life turned into an unfinished game, due to the comments and actions demonstrated by the Lutheran High School football team, also known as the Lutheran Lions. Students on the EHS football team reported hearing Lutheran players saying racial slurs and talking rudely about Tom while in the locker rooms. One thing, in particular, stood out to me that left me shocked. According to one parent of a student on the EHS team, “The Lutheran team used racial slurs to the Evergreen team’s minority players and said 'we will bury you like your dead coach' outrageous behavior." I feel like no person should ever make jokes about the passing of another person. and what was said was not only distasteful but disrespectful to Tom Poholsky and his family. The unsportsmanlike conduct demonstrated by the Lutheran Lions was outrageous and appalling, and I think that a reasonable solution to this issue would be to expel all team members who participated in this form of hate shown towards the Poholskys and the EHS Community from the team because and racism and the passing of a loved one are not a joke.
