Bub Rocks and We Can't Imagine Sea Crest Without Him!!!

The Issue

One of the things that makes the entire Coastside such a great place to live and raise kids is the sense of community, of belonging no matter your background or where you come from. And literally no individual at Sea Crest better illustrates this concept than Michael “Bub” Lederman. Michael is not only beloved by our community- and especially our children, he is a genuine representative of the occasionally screwy but always lovable heart and soul that make up our community- and the school our children attend.

Yet despite his revered position at Sea Crest and on the Coastside, the Administration at Sea Crest has elected to force Bub out, for reasons that aren't really relevant to this petition. This petition is about our desires and demands as parents of our children- that they receive the best possible educational experience at Sea Crest, including their artistic, emotional, and developmental enrichment.

We know of no teacher at Sea Crest or anywhere else that so positively influences such a wide array of students in such a wide array of life lessons. Bub teaches our kids to dream, create, explore, produce and provide artistic expression and material in a way that is unique to him, and as a result unique to Sea Crest. The loss of Bub would not be a loss that could be replaced, and our kids would lose an amazing resource as they grow towards adulthood. And we aren't willing to stand by and allow that to happen.

Bub needs to stay, and by endorsing this petition you make your voice heard in ways it may not have been heard before. By signing this petition you make your voice, and your opinion known, for the school to act on as they please. The joy of being an involved community is that we collectively have more power than the individual fighting for their own cause, and a petition like this can convey our desires and thoughts in a way that would otherwise not be possible.

Bub Rocks, and we the undersigned are stating here unequivocally that we want him at Sea Crest next year when our kids return, fresh off a summer of adventure and ready for a new adventure in the coming school year- with Bub leading the way- and all of us cheering them on.

Thank you,

The BubRocks Crew

The Decision Makers

Sea Crest School
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter. I would like to apologise that you were brought into a private matter between the school and one of its employees. As you are aware our drama teacher Michael Lederman has decided to leave Sea Crest School at the end of this school year. He has served the school for 17 years and whilst he will be missed, we wish him well in his new endeavours. The cornerstone of Sea Crest's compensation system is to offer fair and equitable compensation to every employee, which promotes a collegial and congenial faculty culture. This means no one is discriminated against and no one gets special treatment. This ensures that we are able to attract and retain excellent teachers to staff our entire programme. The school has worked diligently over the last few years to implement this policy. Despite our best efforts, Mr. Lederman was unwilling to come to agreement on a collaborative path forward. Sea Crest School highly values its teachers. When we benchmark our compensation and benefits against our peer schools (which we do each year), we spend a higher percentage of our operating budget on faculty salaries than many other schools, despite having a much lower tuition. We even increased the budget for salary increases this year and our salary ranges are competitive. Sea Crest School is 100% committed to our drama programme. We are confident that it will continue to strengthen and that we will find an excellent drama teacher to continue the work that Mr. Lederman began. If you would like to follow-up with me further, then I would be happy to speak with you, either in person or on the phone. Dr. Tekakwitha M. Pernambuco-Wise Head of School
