Get Chartwells to Respond to Racial Discrimination at TU

The Issue

Towson University community,

We would like to make you aware of the racial discrimination that is taking place on our campus. After a series of meetings and email correspondences, the Towson SGA has found that Chartwells has not yet taken the necessary action and Towson University does not reserve the right to reprimand the parties in question. We encourage all parties involved to make this a priority and hope that sharing this information will raise their level of concern.

Chartwells Higher Education is the dining service provider for Towson University. They are responsible for the dining experience on TU's campus and for many universities across the nation. This company serves as the corporate head for Mr. Brown and his associates. The company prides itself on "building a people-first culture.”

Compass Group USA is the umbrella company of Chartwells. The company's large-scale catering services can be found across numerous sectors including business, healthcare, sports & entertainment, and education - to name a few. The organization claims to be "committed to basing relations with our employees on respect for the dignity of the individual and fair treatment for all.”

Since 2017, Mr. Brown has been subjected to racial discrimination from his superiors and within the professional environment at the Towson University Department of Dining Services. During his time at TU, he has generously served our students and community while simultaneously being ignored and refused aid throughout several incidents on campus. While all managers are required to have a harassment training that covers racial discrimination, according to Brown, his superior often did not uphold these principles. After years of reporting his encounters with racist commenting, verbal harassment, and corrupt business practices, he has given us permission to share his story

In response to filing claims to corporate & HR that reported the misconduct of his superiors and the mistreatment of Towson Dining Services associates, Mr. Brown was met with retaliation.

  • Corporate/HR neglected to respond on some cases and made light of Mr. Brown's claims on disrespect and discrimination.
  • Superiors spoke about Mr. Brown's case in front of other employees without his consent.
  • A superior solicited false anonymous statements against Mr. Brown - “If he hits you or belittles you, you can tell me.”
  • Mr. Brown was falsely accused and written up for endangering students during the romaine lettuce E-coli outbreak.
  • Mr. Brown is the only manager being kept home during the summer 2020 work season. Instead of his scheduled July 17th return, his return date is now delayed until further notice.

Towson University must be inclusive for all community members - students or otherwise. Any individual on our campus should receive the same treatment and respect without fear of discrimination based on their race or ethnicity.
