Remove Saugus High School's Indigenous Image

Remove Saugus High School's Indigenous Image
The Issue
The current mascot representing Saugus High School, MA is a red Native American head in a feathered headdress representing American Indignious people. Over the years, the faculty at Saugus High has declared this image as a symbol of leadership. In doing this, they are blatantly disrespecting Native American culture while condoning a racist mascot. It misinforms members of all communities about indigenous culture which is extremely harmful.
We are demanding the removal of the sachem head on the exterior of our building. We will further hope that the use of a sachem as our mascot will be abolished. We call to remove any further cultural representation of Native Americans in the future from school apparel and more.
For The Culture, our group which has been targeting racial injustices in the community, has been working on this project for a while now. We are delighted to see that there are many members of our community who have come together in this realization.
We are hoping we can come to an agreement with the board of education and work to find another mascot for Saugus High School. The start of the new Saugus Middle-High School could also be the start of respectful changes in our community.
“The discontinued use of American Indian mascots is a gesture to show that this kind of racism toward and the disrespect of, all people in our country and in the larger global context, will not be tolerated” - American Psychological Association
