YES to 3 Storeys - Preserve our Main Street Newmarket Heritage - Stop the Swap
This petition made change with 1,200 supporters!
We are a diverse group of Newmarket citizens, business and property owners who care about respecting the heritage designation of our Main Street district. We understand growth and intensification must happen, but it should be done within the existing framework of our Heritage Conservation District Plans and bylaws.
A proposed 7-storey rental development surrounding the Heritage Clock Tower will dwarf this iconic landmark, and forever cast a shadow over a nearby historic community church.
Development and investment in our community is vital for its long term stability and growth.
Development guided by the Official Town Plan, in keeping with the goals and objectives of our community maximizes the opportunities inherent in the official plan.
Development in our downtown heritage district presents a unique challenge: to balance preserving the past with optimizing the community’s full potential.
We welcome investment in all areas of our community and respect the rights of developers to profit from their investments.
This proposed development in our downtown heritage conservation district exceeds the legislated planning bylaws by four full storeys, and increases the density above mandated standards for a healthy neighbourhood.
We petition the Newmarket Town Council (and urge the developer) to respect the 3-storey building height limitations as mandated under Heritage legislation and in the Official Town Plan.
We also request that the Town not enter into a land swap agreement that will enable this development to go forward in its proposed form.
