Stop industrial zone change in downtown Sayville against storage units

The Issue

SAFEGUARD STORAGE wants to build mini self storage units, 10 x 10 and up to 10 x 30 in the F-14 Sportsplex recreational building located at 246 N. Main Street in Sayville. They want to do a ZONE CHANGE FROM a B1 (Business 1) which is part of our downtown business district to an I1 which is a zone change for industrial use. The Sayville Chamber, residents and business owners are adamant that we are against these storage units in our business district abd community as the Town of Islip code for mini storage units presently only allows mini storage units in an industrial zone. We are against this zone change. Ww want to remain intact and whole. Once this is zoned for industrial use,  it opens the door to other uses that do not fit a Main Street Business district or residential community.  The Safguard Storage also wants to build more units directly across the street from the sportsplex in the parking lot on Hanson Ave..directly next door to homes as that area is already zoned industrial. How do we allow this to happen to the residents on this street? With children and families and Browns Creek at the end of the block??

There are 2 mini storage unit facilities going up currently that were already recently approved within 2 miles of this location, as well as two in Bayport. One was approved on the corner of Oakdale Bohemia Road on the service road of Sunrise Hwy.and the other on the North side of Sunrise Hwy Service Road and Lincoln Avenue.

In addition to the petition, we are asking the community to attend the Town of Islip meetings to voice their opinions and help to protect the sanctity of our Main Street Business District. We are against this zone change for this chain of  Safeguard Self-Storage facilities to come to Main Street and shorten our downtown business district as not only does it open the door to other industrial zone changes to take place in the future,  but there is not one thing that our businesses and residential community will gain from this project, including revenue and foot traffic from these storage units. We are asking Town of Islip board for your assistance in  protecting our business district by not approving this project on Main Street in  Sayville and the surrounding residential area. It is extreme dangerous to change the zone in a business district.  This is a very slippery slope. We ask that the Town of Islip board hear what we want and need in our community...not what's being forced on us by outside corporate and private entities. Thank you.
Take the next step! Sign below and share with other members of our community! Tell the Safeguard attorney, Assemblyman Keith Brown to do it in his own District 12 backyard in Northport! Not Sayville!
