Amazon's (Holbrook) Proposal Illustrates Why We Must Update Our Zoning

*Petition Update - I am relaunching this petition.  I am relaunching this petition because of the Amazon proposal.   On July 16, 2026, Amazon requested a zone change to build a $1 billion dollar, 4.2 million square foot distribution site in Holbrook.  It’s a 140-acre wooded lot at the headwaters of a creek (San Souci).  Were the project approved, according to Pine Barrens fire management plans, between 15,000 to 40,000 trees—trees that provide oxygen, cool our neighborhood and clean our waterways—would be felled.  That forest feeds San Souci which flows through Sayville and Bayport into the Great South Bay via Brown’s River.  It’s 21 times larger than Long Island’s next largest and one of the biggest plants in the country.   170 people signed this petition, it’s been shared by 60 and viewed by 1500 people.  Once I secure 500 signatures, I will be delivering the petition and speaking to the Town of Islip Council at a public meeting.  I will share that recording on my Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/james.bertsch.33  Readers are also encouraged to call or text me later after November 6th (516.987.6453) for the Town’s recording of my public address.
