Dorothy Hamill Rink - Make it a Priority! We need a new Rink!
The Issue
The Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink is home to the Greenwich Youth Cardinals Hockey Association (Previously named the Greenwich Blues), the Greenwich High School Girls and Boys JV and Varsity hockey teams, The Windy Hill Skating Club, The Town of Greenwich Figure Skating Competition, The Middle School Hockey Tournament as well as many town organized skating clinics, free skates and private parties. The Greenwich Skating Club rents over 300 hours of ice from Hamill each year to supplement their ice needs above and beyond their outdoor rink's capacity and seasonal operation schedule.
The Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink is located on Sue Merz Way in Greenwich, Connecticut and was constructed in 1971. Overall, given the age of many of the systems and elements, the existing facility is functioning. Ongoing maintenance and repairs have extended the useful life of many components. There are no elements or systems observed to be in failure or in danger of failure due to condition or maintenance. However, many elements and systems are operating beyond their expected useful life and could be subject to unexpected age-related failures. To freeze the rink surface, the chilling system pumps chilled brine water through pipes under the concrete slab which then chills the ice-bearing concrete slab. This system is almost 50 years old and could fail at any time.
The great news is that there is a plan in motion for a new replacement rink! We strongly urge all town departments involved to make the capital budget request a first priority for the 2020/2021 fiscal budget.
It's time for a new Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink! Thousands of local and visiting skaters and hockey players use Hamill 7 days per week. The demand for year round ice far exceeds supply. A new Hamill Rink will fill this need and be a source of pride for the Town of Greenwich.
Let Town Hall, The Selectman's office, Parks & Recreation, The BET, the RTM and Hamill Rink know that you support this project today by signing this petition!
