There is an ongoing crisis putting our children at risk every day, drivers illegally passing stopped school buses. It’s happening time and time again where innocent children are being put in danger by law breaking, reckless drivers. There is a very simple solution to this problem, we need every single bus to be equipped with safety cameras. We pay some of the highest taxes in the country. There is no reason this cannot nor should not be made a priority. Hold these dangerous drivers accountable before another unnecessary and preventable tragedy occurs.
At my bus stop alone I have seen 3 drivers passing a stopped bus, with stop signs extended and lights flashing, while children are boarding. Other parents in the community have stated the same. I invite you to share your stories of this illegal and dangerous activity to show just how common of an occurrence this is. We are no longer going to sit around and let these drivers put our children at risk. Laws were put in place to protect them, and it’s time to start enforcing them.

“New York traffic law states that traffic from either direction approaching a stopped school bus with flashing red lights must stop before reaching the bus. Drivers should stop their vehicles at least 20 feet from the bus. You MUST stop whether you are approaching a school bus from the front or from the rear.”
“The fine when you pass a stopped school bus ranges from a minimum of $400 for a first violation  to a maximum of $1,500 for three violations in three years. If you are convicted of three of these violations in three years, your driver license will be revoked for a minimum of six months.”
