Lights At Agawam Skatepark

The Issue

This park has been around much longer than the dog park across the street but it seems the town prioritizes their comfort and convenience. It may be because we are not represented in Town Hall Meetings, or due to a general stigma about skateboarders.

Today I’m starting this petition not only to push for lights in Agawam’s upcoming “Master Plan” budget but also to motivate the people who skate here daily to gather and show up to speak for our park.

We do not need another temporary fix for the cracks in the ground. We don’t need to move the park anywhere. We don’t need more manual pads or miniature ramps. We definitely do not need a $2,000 picnic table!

We want lights.

Why do we need lights?

  1. Safety during the later hours.
  2. An added two hours of time to skate. The same hours the dog park is open and fully lit.
  3. We believe the budget is being spent in ways that go against this group conscience.
  4. We are tired of skating the dark.

Our response to those not in favor:

- ”But there’s surrounding houses!”

The lights could easily be installed facing the other direction. The dog park has light that cannot be seen from the surrounding streets.

- ”People would stay at the park later”

We aren’t asking for 24/7 access to the park. We are asking for the equal amount of time to skate that your dogs have to poop across the street.

- ”Lights will be expensive”

With a 24,000 dollar budget to improve the park, this is minimal. Drop the picnic table, the temporary crack fix, and give us lights.

Let’s get ASP lit.
