Well, unfortunately, we didn’t make it to 200 signatures on the petition by 10:00 p.m. Thanksgiving evening, so there won’t be a drawing. But, that’s ok. We have 135 so far. We are still seeking signatures on the petition showing that the Town and natives of Clifton Forge care about the Stone House of Mountain View Cemetery. Lets see if we can get 300 signatures.
The net proceeds from the sale of “The History of Clifton Forge, VA” by Elizabeth Hicks Corron are going toward the restoration of the Stone House. We’ve already made over $1,000 in a month.
There is a grant from the Historical Preservation Society, but certain people are standing in the way of applying for this grant that would cost the Town nothing. Additionally, there are other grants available. Donations are accepted, no amount is too small. I am working on making this a non-profit. If you already have a copy of “The History of Clifton Forge” and wish to donate, contact me in messenger through the facebook page “Save the Stone House at Mountain View Cemetery” or my personal page at “Stewart Goodwin”. I will send you my address.
I will be at the 4th Annual Good News Christmas Bazaar in Covington on Dec. 4th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with copies of the book to sell, to collect signatures on the petition, and if you want, you can make donations. I am also working on other fund raisers.
It’s a shame for this Stone House (originally a chapel) that was built in 1934 by our forefathers to feed their children to be allowed to get into the shape that it’s in. We need to bring it back to show respect for those who worked hard to build it just after the Great Depression.
