Have Towards Data Science publish an article critical of Facebook software
The Issue
This article Is Facebook's Prophet the Time-Series Messiah, or Just a Very Naughty Boy? decries Facebook's Prophet. It was rejected by Towards Data Science for reasons unstated. This petition urges Towards Data Science to run the article.
That publication, read by the world's data scientists, features countless uncritical accounts of Facebook's software that do not come close to the standard of the critique that was rejected. This petition accuses Towards Data Science of effectively censoring work critical of Facebook engineering while at the same time foisting a slew of completely unconsidering, risible articles on the world.
As an example of articles about Facebook Prophet that this publication has accepted:
- Time-Series Forecasting: Predicting Stock Prices Using Facebook's Prophet Model
- Forecasting Stock Prices using Prophet
- How to Use Facebook's Prophet and Why it is So Powerful
- Predicting Apple Inc. Stock Prices Using Facebook's Prophet
- Forecasting Stock Prices using Prophet
- Time Series Modeling of Bitcoin Prices
- Prophet-able Forecasting
And one might go on.
This is just an example, obviously. Towards Data Science has become a gatekeeper to half a million data scientists and has enormous influence over what is read and what is not. With that comes a modicum of scientific responsibility. (Just imagine if there was a similar publication titled Towards Brain Surgery).
We the petition signers exhort Towards Data Science to lift their standards and reject articles that:
- Evince a complete disdain for prior work, such as when the author has clearly failed to perform so much as a google search to locate similar articles.
- Evince complete contempt for even the most rudimentary principles of statistics
And, notwithstanding the power of Facebook, we urge Towards Data Science to run articles even if they are critical of data science approaches and technologies touted by large, powerful corporations.
