#ToTheLeft Install More Left-Turn Lights in Ontario
Why this petition matters
“What can be done to make Ontario intersections safer?”
#ToTheLeft has a clear objective to collect as many signatures as possible, so that the Ontario government can then see the demand to invest in installing left-turn lights at intersections.
Our goal for 2022 is to have 22 new left-turn lights installed in Ontario.
More left-turn lights will be an investment in the safety of all, including pedestrians and drivers. Out of the many options out there, left-turn lights are the superior method to ensure road safety.
What is a protected left turn? Essentially it is a left-turn signal or an advanced green that gives a driver the right of way to successfully complete a left hand turn. The problem is that without these dedicated signals, pedestrians and cyclists might be crossing without the driver’s awareness.
Fully protected left turns have their own set of traffic lights. Once the lights transition from green to red cars need to wait behind the line for the next set. A study showed crashes causing injury decreased by 46% and decreased by 66% for fatal crashes when a protected left turn signal was implemented.
Nadia Mozumder, 17, was fatally struck in 2021 by a driver making an unprotected left-turn. There was another accident last year in Brampton killing 2 people and leaving one injured.
There are just too many accidents happening in Ontario, which can be reduced/prevented if there were more left-turn lights installed.
If the province wants to take Vision-Zero seriously, and reduce the fatalities of car accidents to zero, then more needs to be done.
