Oil company TOTAL must pay starving Yemeni workers 1 year of unpaid wages - help them NOW

208 workers were employed as security guards to protect the sites of the French energy company TOTAL S.A. in Yemen. Their work was subcontracted to the British security company G4S. But in 2015, both companies halted most of their operations in Yemen, justifying this move by the deterioration of the security situation in the country. Profiting from the lack of functioning infrastructure and the widespread corruption of court and police officials, they did so in the worse manner possible as far as the workers were concerned - in blatant disregard of legal procedures, ignoring their financial obligations to the workers and without even duly informing these workers of their own redundancy. In December 2015, a local labor arbitration court issued a verdict ordering the provisional seizing of all the buildings and assets of TOTAL, providing payment of all the workers’ wages and entitlements - but the court decision was entirely ignored by both companies.

As mandated by the court, over a hundred security guards are still working up to this day to protect the sites in question, but without having been paid for an entire year and counting, their families suffering from terrible poverty and growing hunger. Over the last year, the workers have organised many protests to demand their rights and wages. On December 3, 2016, three of these workers were shot dead by an armed gang directly connected to the local managers of TOTAL in Yemen and of the entity still operating under the name of “G4S-Yemen” (although G4S itself denies any relations with this entity since it ceased its activities in the country in the middle of 2015).

This petition has been set up to defend the workers in this dispute and relay their demands:
- to be paid for all their wage arrears and other entitlements
- to set up an independent investigation in the killing of their colleagues and bring to justice the people responsible for this crime.
