Improve communication skills in healthcare practices to avoid disparities in care delivery

The Issue

Disparities in Healthcare delivery systems are sometimes evident due to problems with communication and trust development between healthcare providers and patients. This is most evident in the various communities where  many underlying anxieties can manifest as attitudes and other behaviors that could impede efforts for trust development. Healthcare providers must master the use of soft skills of strategic compassionate communication to gain patients trust and thus improve patient compliance and overall care delivery. There are skills to address unconscious biases and limit its effect on care delivery. I am a family nurse practitioner and have studied patient behaviors for close to 30 years. In 2013, I became a patient following a surgical procedure. Having knowledge of both experiences exposed me to the numerous anxieties patients experience and how healthcare providers can engage strategically to improve trust for various patients attitudes/emotions  eg. angry, dependent, opinionated, suspicious, talkative, overwhelmed etc. I published 2 books as a teaching resource and also developed accredited online courses. These skills will help improve patient trust and engagement and reduce care delivery disparities especially present in underserved communities eg . the noted  increase in COVID19 fatalities in African American communities. I am hopeful that these resources can be introduced in nursing/medical schools as part of educational curriculum. It can also be used in healthcare establishments for staff training on cultural care practices.  My website is https://nonyetochi.com
