Toronto is about to run out of landfill space. We have to decide which alternative is best for our community.

Unfortunately, city hall is pushing for incineration - the most expensive option and worst for our health. As stated by Environmental Defence, "burning waste generates the most toxic substances known to science, dioxins and furans." 

The Good News?  There are alternatives and the infrastructure already exists: waste reduction, composting and recycling. 

ORGANICS make up 46% of landfilled garbage
RECYCLING makes up 14% of landfilled garbage

 
This means 60% of our garbage can be managed just by composting and improved recycling!   

We, Good Judy Inc., are gathering locals and other small businesses to say no to burning garbage. In support of  Environmental Defence and Toronto Environmental Alliance  we will bring our collective concerns to city council.  This won't be our first trip to City Council, in June we went to the town hall and were shocked by the lack of education around incineration displayed by the council.  Here are a few key points that really hit home from a recent article by Environmental Defence:

1. "Incinerators cost so much to build and maintain that they need a constant and guaranteed supply of waste for many years to come. That means they actually encourage the creation of more waste and work against waste reduction policies that can save money."
2. "Burning waste generates the most toxic substances known to science, dioxins and furans."
3. "In Paris, FR, (home to a 700,000-tonne/year waste incinerator) authorities recently told residents not to eat homegrown eggs because of high levels of dioxins and furans that had contaminated the surrounding area."

On the City of Toronto's website they describe incineration as follows "energy-from-waste (incineration)".  This manipulative tactic to re-brand incineration is a harmful one that may lead constituents to believe that garbage incineration can be linked to "renewable energy".  It couldn't be further from the truth!  As outlined by Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA), "Ontario’s energy-from-waste incinerators emit ten times more carbon than other energy sources, similar to that of coal."

We are calling on the Mayor of Toronto and City Council to reject incineration as an option and invest more in recycling, composting and other waste reduction options.

SIGN OUR PETITION AND ENCOURAGE THE CITY TO TURN TOWARDS COMPOSTING and away from environmental damage, poor air quality, increased health problems, and a stiff yearly incineration bill (that your tax dollars will pay for).  

SAY NO TO INCINERATION, and YES to diverting organic waste to compost facilities.
