Hi everyrone,
What do you think is the true face of Topshop? A supermodel like Karlie Kloss who is the face of Topshop's spring collection, or a cleaner like me who is paid a poverty wage and is fighting for a living wage?
Watch (and share) this video to decide: www.facebook.com/uvwunion/videos/1031215370280035/?pnref=story
Topshop is telling everyone to be “Be More Karlie in 2016”. But we can't all earn £millions for the work we do.
Someone worked out that she gets £193 for every step she takes down the catwalk. Meanwhile, me and my colleagues would have to work for 29 hours to earn what she gets by taking one step.
In fact, we're not even asking for £millions. We're simply asking for a wage which is sufficient to cover the basic cost of living in the London, otherwise known as the London Living Wage. This is currently £9.40 per hour.
Also, as some of you may have seen in response to your messages on Topshop's Faceook and Twitter account they issued the following statement:
“At Arcadia we value and appreciate our staff and are proud of the contribution they make to our business.
In the interests of transparency and in response to some factually incorrect allegations made by United Voices of the World, we wish to confirm that all our employees are paid hourly rates which are legally compliant.
In Central London we currently pay rates well above the UK Government’s National Minimum Wage. For us, it is essential to remain competitive and in line with other major retailers to attract, grow and retain the best people.”
Firstly, I can't see how they can value us if they pay us poverty wages. But as you can see they seem to be intentionally missing the point entirely. No-one has accused them of not paying wages which are legally compliant. In fact, it's quite the opposite. The problem is they are only paying us wages which are just legally compliant i.e. the National Minimum Wage or just above.
Topshop claim that my union United Voices of the World (UVW) has made “factually incorrect” statements yet they have never pointed out these so-called factually incorrect statements and UVW stands by all the statements it has made.
Also, and ironically, the only factually incorrect statements being made are from Topshop who claim to pay rates well above the national minimum wage. If they did pay rates “well above” the national minimum wage they would be paying the Living Wage which they're not.
I am currently paid £6.75 per hour, 5p above the national minimum wage. Is that “well above” the national minimum wage to you?
