Toowoomba needs a water play space to be made a priority for our region
The issue
Our region is a region of families with beautiful parks for young children. They are missing vital infrastructure to accommodate the primary school, pre teen and teenager groups.
Priorities of this petition;
- TRC to support, commit funds and make a water play space a priority with further community consultation on how it would look.
- Look to reinstate state and/or federal funding for railway precinct for further water play space options
Our regional council continues to be reactive instead of proactive in relation to growth in our region and meeting the needs of local families. A water play space is needed with increasing temperatures and local pools turning away patrons due to being at capacity.
A water play space is not only for Toowoomba families but would add to Toowoomba being a tourist destination all year round not just at carnival time.
Discussions of a railway precinct are on the back burner and honestly lacking in parking to accommodate such an area to be utilised by our growing population for a larger play space. This would still be a welcomed option and a starting point for future growth.
I want council to support and allocate future funding for infrastructure and future plans for a water play space suitable for the size of our city. Toowoomba is such a large region as the capital of the Darling Downs.
In research already provided to Toowoomba regional council we have previously had higher average winter and summer temperatures than some of the listed places below so it can no longer be an argument. In past research we also had higher rain fall than some.
With discussion around costs for “whole of life” for a project like this including supervision and maintenance options like eco ponds/ lakes are becoming a popular choice as just one of many options.
Please go and see information of researched lagoons and play spaces from other regions.

After being told that council do not have the funds Tim McMahon took the cause to council and only two councillors supported a water play space (Tim McMahon, Rebecca Vonhoff).
compared to previous support for water play spaces;
State and federal funding was retracted for the railway precinct and I would like to look to see it reinstated as our region is tired of missing out due to it being seen as a safe Liberal seat. No more political games. Please make it about the people.
More consultation needs to be had around what the water play spaces would look like and where, as parking in the CBD is not sufficient for a large play space.
I would like councillors to make this a priority for our future tourism and children.
I would think if we want to reduce crime this could be a positive step by giving older children better options for activities.
Please make sure to include phone number details for petition to be accepted by council.
