Come back, Tony Windsor, Australia needs you
The issue
Australia is suffering from a dearth of straight-talking honest politicians.
In his time in federal parliament, representing the NSW seat of New England (2001 - 2013), Tony Windsor developed the reputation of working hard for his constituents.
The Nationals, who had held the seat continuously since 1922 had given up being a voice for rural and regional Australia, and Windsor stepped in, undoubtedly doing a far better job than the Nationals for the locals.
He has stood up for farmers on the Liverpool Plains against mining companies. He performed excellent work as chair of the federal committee which produced a report for the Murray-Darling Basin Authority in 2011. In 2004 he resisted moves by the Nationals to get him out of politics and into a cushy diplomatic post. He later reported the offer to the Electoral Commission who referred it on to the Federal Police.
He supported the Gillard minority government after the 2010 election, and was swayed by their policies on carbon emission reductions, the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the National Broadband Network. He knew these policies would benefit his voters, and all the people of Australia alike.
This resulted in opposition from critics, and by the 2013 election, Windsor needed a rest. His children were getting married, and hints of a cerebral disease came to light which has not turned out to be as bad as he had anticipated.
After three years as a normal citizen, Windsor's interest in politics has not waned, and the desire to return is there, particularly after the Federal Government announced it had granted an approval for the Chinese Shenhua company to mine a 35 square kilometre area on the Liverpool Plains, Australia's most productive agricultural land.
When Windsor relinquished his seat by not standing in the 2013 election, the Nationals' Barnaby Joyce moved from the Senate to contest and ultimately win New England.
Tony Windsor has never been a fan of Barnaby Joyce, and if he was to return, the challenge of defeating Joyce would be an added bonus.
