U-46 High School Seniors deserve a proper high school graduation. #U46, please do better!
The Issue
The High School Graduating Class of 2020 was scheduled to happen at the end of May. Then it was rescheduled for July 11th. Now on June 13th, an impersonal Virtual Graduation Ceremony goes live @ 3:00pm. Streamwood High School students of the Class of 2020 will be honored in this virtual ceremony while sitting at home in front of their computer screen. And like some Seniors have said with disgust and disappointment “Graduation attire: my pjs!” This is their “Super Bowl” moment and it’s being stolen away from them. We owe them better than this!!!
The Class of 2020 deserves a proper Commencement Ceremony. Graduation is something that these high school Seniors have worked for their entire lives and an accomplishment of a lifetime.
Most of the Class of 2020 has already lost their Senior Prom, Spring Sport activities, Senior Trips and the list continues to grow. High School graduation is a day these kids will never get back and we need to find a way to make it happen and recognize them for all their hard work.
Not all kids will go to college and have another opportunity to walk across the stage and be recognized by their family and friends. Many students in this community might be the first to graduate high school in their families. Many parents of these Seniors might have lost their jobs during this pandemic. We as a community need to bring some happiness back to these Seniors and their families during this difficult time.
Parents and families look forward to this day from the first day of Kindergarten. I remember Kindergarten teachers on the last day saying “You are looking at the Graduating Class of 2020!”. That seemed so far away at the time, it is here and we need to make it happen.
They deserve it! Class of 2020 came in roaring into this world with a challenge after 9/11! They defeated and rose above expectations that battled in front of them!! They deserve a graduation! The teachers deserve a send off! We all deserve to see the education system rise up and see their gifts! The gifts of hardship and pride!
We owe this to them!!! We have asked them to register to vote so they can make a difference. We need to show them the political parties are listening. Come up with a better plan. Move them to an outdoor stadium. Give them a parade like other high schools in the area have given their Seniors. Do a VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY like Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School in Bradley, Illinois, did on May 6, 2020, (see the links below) where the Seniors put on a cap and gown, walked the stage, accepted their diploma, had a professional portrait taken, and felt excited and proud to receive their diploma that they’ve worked so hard for all these years.
On Monday, May 18th, Conant High School had a drive-in graduation ceremony at Boomers Field in Schaumburg. Schaumburg High School is having the same on May 20. We owe this to the #U46 High School Seniors.
Make it a requirement that everyone have a mask, limit each student to have just two people in attendance (parents or guardians), sanitizer everywhere.... COME UP with SOMETHING BETTER!
Sign this petition to send the message that we want a proper GRADUATION ceremony for the High School Seniors Graduating Class of 2020. While we most definitely need to be practicing social distancing at this time, they have worked too hard to miss out on walking graduation and receiving their diplomas in the traditional manner.
