Stop Greyhound Racing

Stop Greyhound Racing
The Issue
- Greyhound racing forces greyhounds to run around a track chasing a lure
- greyhounds often get injured or die while racing
- when they aren’t racing they are put in tiny kennels, sometimes stacked on top of each other sometimes for 23 hours at a time- with limited interaction
- the cages have a standard size of 32 inches high, 42 inches deep, and 31 inches wide
- greyhounds usually spend about 95% of their time confined
- greyhounds are often given only shredded paper or old carpet to lay on
- greyhounds are often fed “4-D” meat, which is from dying, disabled, dead or diseased livestock- and 45% of it has been found to contain traces of bacteria from Salmonella
- in the US, the most common injury for a greyhound is a fractured leg, but many also suffer from puncture wounds, muscle tears, ligament tears, joint dislocation and sprains
- in a study, 23% of examined greyhounds suffered from diaphragmatic flutter after a race- a condition that could lead to collapse or sudden death
- at 2-3 months old, greyhound puppies in the US are tattooed with their registration number and birthday
- thousands of greyhounds in the UK have been killed instead of re-homes because they aren’t fast enough
