Don’t tax our veggies!

This petition had 2,071 supporters

In the past week, the prospect of taxing fresh food - such as bread, milk, fruit and veg - has been floated by members of Tony Abbott’s Government.

To me this idea is utterly ridiculous. My name is Kylie Grey. I'm an early childhood educator, a mum of three and a proud United Voice member.

My family already spends a quarter to a third of our income on food, and that’s important to me – my kids are 11, 8 and 7 and I want them to have the best nutrition I can afford.

In Australia we know unhealthy lifestyles, diabetes and childhood obesity are serious problems, and they’re getting worse. In my work I've seen kids with poor diets, and I know how badly it can affect their health and emotional wellbeing.

Fresh food is already expensive for many families and individuals, but when you go into the supermarket, junk food is always on special. Government ministers are the last people who should be making it harder for low and middle income Australians to eat well.

Tony Abbott and his government need to talk to real people. Anyone in the street will tell him this idea is rotten to the core.

But we urgently need to speak up if we're to get our voices heard: in just a few weeks the Government will launch a major review of taxation, and the GST will be part of it.

If we need more tax revenue to fund vital services we all rely on, then we should close the loopholes big business is using to avoid paying its fair share.

So sign my petition now and add your voice: Mr Abbott, don’t tax our veggies!
