Stop NZTA destruction of Aotea Sea Scouts and the Onehunga waterfront

The transport system into and out of Onehunga is about to undergo a radical change with the East West Link project and plans proposed by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). NZTA’s plans negatively impact on Aotea Sea Scouts and our operations.
The NZTA solution precludes further restoration of Onehunga’s waterfront, lost when state highway 20 originally went in, and places a six metre high motorway interchange directly outside the front door of our Sea Scouts building. This interchange cuts off our access to the only parkland nearby; Gloucester Park has been used by generations of Aotea Sea Scouts families to learn Scouting skills, play games, and have fun. Without access to Gloucester Park, our programme will be totally compromised and it’s just not good enough!
We have a simple solution, in 2007 when a prior interchange was proposed, NZTA had agreed to reclaim land in front of our Sea Scouts building and round to the Port of Onehunga. The resource consent failed at that time only because NZTA did not make the reclamation big enough. We say this is now the time for NZTA to get it right. We want NZTA to reclaim land from the already award winning reclamation of Taumanu Reserve, right round to the Port of Onehunga and relocate our building to a new beachfront close to the port; such a reclamation benefits everyone, and in fact the same proposal has been made by the Onehunga Business Association and The Onehunga Enhancement Society, in the form of the Community Plan. NZTA are not prepared to work on the community proposal, and if things don’t change Onehunga’s and our waterfront dreams will be lost forever.
NZTA say that due to a volcanic basalt shelf being a protected geological feature in the Unitary Plan of Auckland Council, and this being protected under the Resource Management Act, there is nothing they can do. We, Aotea say rubbish, we want NZTA to work with Auckland Council to explore ways of overcoming this rock that is stopping progress. We hope you agree.
Aotea Sea Scouts want NZTA, Auckland Council and the Government to take time and look at this more carefully. There are solutions that allow for a significant new waterfront asset to be developed while maintaining some visibility of the basalt shelf. NZTA should not be allowed to further compromise Onehunga’s waterfront, it is time they give Onehunga something back. Aotea Sea Scouts view is a view for the future of Onehunga, we want prime waterfront parkland developed with new beaches, and our building to be moved to a new beachfront to maintain its heritage association with the sea amidst the new parkland and beaches that can be enjoyed by everyone. The cost is small compared to the overall spend of the project, and we don’t think it unreasonable.
If you agree, please sign the petition, help protect Aotea Sea Scouts and get a real waterfront asset for the people of Onehunga. Once you have signed the petition please click here to donate.
