Stop the effort to ban LEED for public buildings
Stop the effort to ban LEED for public buildings
The Issue
DON’T LET STATE LAWMAKERS MOVE ALABAMA BACKWARDS IN THE GREEN BUILDING MARKET
Timber lobbyists are ramming a bill through the Alabama Legislature that would ban the use of the nation’s top green building leadership program for taxpayer-funded buildings. That’s not leadership; that’s paying favors to corporate lobbyists at the expense of Alabamians and the environment.
If enacted, Section 3 of AL SB 152 will throw out LEED – the preferred sustainability language for hundreds of Alabama businesses. The bill sponsors, Senators Keahey and Whatley, don’t seem to understand that LEED is flexible, and you don’t have to pursue any one specific credit if it’s not your favorite. But throwing the baby out with the bathwater is the wrong move! In Alabama, a growing number of LEED-certified projects (100+) and LEED professionals (1,300+) are helping to attract business, create jobs, increase competitiveness, build responsibly, save energy, and conserve
natural resources at the same time.
Let’s demand better stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Let’s demand greater energy efficiency in public facilities. Let’s demand that SB 152 be stopped!
