STIFFEN ANIMAL CRUELTY LAWS PRIME MINISTER Mulcair, Trudeau, or Harper

This petition had 27,604 supporters

The Issue

Animal cruelty laws in Canada are archaic and impose exceptionally low fines in exceptionally high abuse cases. Stiffening the laws would bring standards in Canada closer to other countries' standards and also closer to the current culturally acceptable standards of animal care felt by Canadians. Heftier fees, especially for large abuse (factories) and sever abuse (extreme suffering, repeated offences) cases would help give money back to programs needed to enforce the laws.

Thank you for signing the petition calling for stronger laws against animal cruelty. The NDP has long been committed to updating Canada’s animal protection laws. We have tabled numerous private members’ bills and petitions calling for stronger protections for animals, including legislation that would help to provide stronger penalties for unacceptable practices such as animal fighting. We have also tabled bills that would update the Criminal Code provisions regarding the treatment of animals. An NDP government will work to strengthen animal welfare legislation. We will also work with the agricultural sector to improve welfare for farm animals by updating the Health of Animal Regulations.
