Raise the internet upload speed offered by Virgin Media

The Issue

Virgin Media is once again increasing download speeds for its customers and the new top tier, 200Mbps is already available to some of their customers.

But once again upload speed takes a back seat. The new 200Mbps tier will have a worryingly minuscule 12Mbps upload speed. This is the same upload offered by their previous top tier 152Mbps.

Their 100Mbps and 120Mbps services also had very poor upload speeds. But the ratio was usually around 1/10th download speed. From 120Mb to 152Mbps and now the new 200Mbps service we've seen the ratio of upload to download go from 1/10th to 1/13th and now to 1/16th

With the internet being more interactive than ever before with millions of hours of Video, Images and other personal files being uploaded to services every day these poor upload speeds are putting Virgin Media customers in the slow lane.

Virgin Media advertises their high download speeds which entice consumers to signup from rival more balanced services but they don't discuss upload speed in any of their advertisements. And as we all know, upload matters.

Sky, BT, TalkTalk and various 3G and 4G internet providers offer upload speeds that are 1/4th download. You can capably receive 20Mbps upload on a 70Mbps download broadband service from any of these listed competitors.

This change petition is not to ask for unreasonable speed ratios. We know that 1:1 and 1:2 are untenable with the network topology that Virgin Media and other ISP's in the UK have invested in. But not even 1/5th (40Mb up / 200Mb down)? Is it not possible for Virgin Media to offer 40Mb upload on a 200Mb line?

That is what this change petition is about, reasonable upload to download ratios. At-least 1/5th.
