Allow pets in the apartments on campus

The Issue

Mental health is something that haunts every part of the world, especially at colleges. Something simple that alleviates mental health is "The Pet Effect." The Pet Effect, also known as the human-animal bond, is a mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals that positively impacts the health and well-being of both (Feldman, 2017).  Here at Coe, we are required to live on campus all 4 years, and if we wish to own a pet, we must first seek a medical professional to assess whether or not an individual has a mental health disorder that meets the requirement of owning an Emotional Support Animal (ESA). This has attached with it a whole load of issues such as the singling out of individuals with pets (adding additional anxiety). On top of this, many of those battling with mental health problems do not seek the help that they need. Because of this, I propose Coe College allow and support the ownership of pets for everyone, eliminating the current animal policy. This way, those fighting mental health problems, but not willing to seek out help, can reap the benefits of pets without feeling as though they are being victimized for having mental health disorders.
