Tom Hanks owes geeky gamers a positive D&D movie

The Issue

In 1982 a young actor named Tom Hanks starred in the infamous made for TV movie, "Mazes & Monsters".

The movie, the book behind it, the James Dallas Egbert III case, and the 'Satanic Panic' of the '80s led to an atmosphere of blaming D&D for teenage suicide, devil worship, and accusations of actual witchcraft.  While this ironically helped bolster the game's popularity and sales for TSR, the company behind D&D, on a smaller scale the blowback led to parents throwing out game materials, schools refusing to allow it as a a legitimate club or activity, and a stigmatization of the hobby which lasted for decades.  For some kids on the geeky side, this was their only social outlet.  To be forbidden from playing the game from misguided parental fears was isolating and crippling to the development of social skills.

Mr. Hanks, this is not your fault.  You were young, you needed the money and exposure, and your performance outshone everyone else in the movie.  But now you are rich, famous, and well connected.  You are in a unique position to give something back, as it were, and as such I and other middle age geeks who went through it as the time appeal to your sense of justice, fairness, and above all else, your sense of humor and ask that you create a positive D&D movie before you leave this mortal realm and go to the Actor's Valhalla.  You can star, produce, direct, whatever but the message pf the movie must be a positive one.

Help us Tom Hanks.  You're our only hope.
