The village of Spences Bridge spans both sides of the Thompson River and has grown up around what is now called the Old Spences Bridge. This older one lane bridge is central to the character and function of the town and it is used daily by locals and visitors alike, whether by automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, or by walking. A newer bridge downstream, on the outskirts of town, was built in the 60's as part of the Trans Canada Highway. Although this newer bridge makes access between both sides of town possible to pedestrians and cyclists, its primary purpose is to service highway traffic, not the infrastructure needs of the villagers who are put in harms way during the 3 to 4 km detour required. The Old Spences Bridge, on the other hand, clearly services these needs and is, in fact, central to the spirit and vitality of the community. To remove the bridge, without replacement with at least a walking/cycling bridge, is to seriously damage the integrity of our village. We trust that this is not the intention of the Minister or the government and that a re-examination of the wisdom of the current decision is in order.
We call for Minister Todd to recognize the importance of the Old Spences Bridge to the integrity of our village and to act now to halt the closure and subsequent removal of this central infrastructure component in our midst. At minimum, we implore the minister to call for a second opinion by a company with "hands on" experience of the actual methods used in the construction of this bridge.
