TODAY: Help Save the Maryland DREAM Act!

The Issue

BREAKING: Seconds before the final vote on the Maryland DREAM Act today, the bill was unexpectedly sent to the conference committee for further debate. We have until midnight tonight to make sure the DREAM Act passes!

Sign the petition to contact Maryland Senators and Delegates and urge them to VOTE YES on the compromise bill before midnight tonight. Time is running out to support the future of education for all kids in Maryland.

More:

Students from all over Maryland, supported by local faith, education, and labor leaders are fighting for an affordable college education and the right to pursue their dreams. Under the proposed “Maryland DREAM Act:”- Higher Education- Tuition Charges- Maryland High School Students Bill (SB167, HB 470), students who live in Maryland would qualify for in-state tuition rates at Maryland’s colleges and universities regardless of immigration status.

Their movement has grown from a small group of students in our local high school and college campuses to a unified group of thousands who are actively pushing for change and passage of the bill. In February, 100 students testified before the Maryland Senate and on March 7th, more than 1,500 students and supporters rallied in Annapolis during CASA de Maryland's Annual Immigration Action Night. We filled Senate hallways, offices and hearing rooms. Our message rang loud and true.

Last month, we had our first victory – passage of the Maryland DREAM Act in the Senate! Then, the DREAM Act passed the Maryland House with minor amendments. CASA de Maryland's members will continue to fight in Annapolis until all Maryland high school students have an affordable option to attend college, but we need your help!

Sign your name now to contact the Delegates in the Maryland State House and Maryland State Senators and let them know to VOTE YES on the final MD DREAM ACT tonight!

Before joining the Change.org team, Jackie led online strategy for America's Voice and fought tooth and nail for the federal DREAM Act, which would recognize the talents and contributions of undocumented youth who were brought to the U.S. as children. It was through five years of immigrant rights organizing -- most of all the compelling stories and campaigns waged by these young people -- that Jackie came to understand the power that an individual story has to ignite change.
