🌊To the Waves: End Ocean Destruction Now🌊
The Issue
Amidst the vibrant blues of our oceans, there is pain. The waters that embrace our very planet are suffering. Actions such as dynamite fishing, irresponsible garbage disposal, and oil spilling are what causes our oceans to lose their beauty and purity. Furthermore, over 80% of land-based sources such as plastics and industrial wastes affect the oceans (Landrigan et al., 2020). As stewards of the earth, let us all take action to lessen the ocean and marine life’s pains before everything is too late. Let us promote sustainable practices such as using eco-friendly items and materials and using the power of social media to spread our words.
The Ocean’s Vitality:
The ocean can be akin to a blanket covering the earth. It covers over 71% of the earth’s surface, with the land only occupying 29% of it (Webb, n.d.). Under its wondrous waves lies a diverse ecosystem. A part of it are the phytoplanktons who mainly produce half of the planet’s oxygen, enabling us to gain oxygen not only from trees. Moreover, the ocean absorbs 25% of all carbon emissions, serving as the world’s carbon sink to mitigate the effects of climate change (United Nations, n.d.). It also supports the food security of over 3 billion people in the world (Smit, 2023).
The Ocean's Vulnerability:
Unfortunately, the ocean, along with the marine life residing in it, are greatly suffering. Over a 100,000 marine creatures meet their demise yearly due to plastic entanglement. Even microplastics are mistaken as food by the poor creatures. This causes ingestion, which has the potential to cause toxic effects, ultimately leading to the marine creature's suffering and end. This signifies that the conditions underneath the ocean's surface is deteriorating at an alarming rate. Hence, let us become the protectors of the oceans by rejecting and condemning practices that harms it.
What WE Should DO:
Together, let us demand the policymakers to take immediate action by banning illegal fishing activities, holding ocean polluters accountable, and improving waste management systems all for the sake of our oceans. The government and people should be more strict in dealing with the society’s wastes so that they may not end up floating around the ocean. By addressing this issue, we acknowledge that the oceans are just as vital as the lands that we live on. This is why we should also give our best efforts to saving and conserving it.
