To the Members of the UK Government:
We, the undersigned citizens of the United Kingdom, are writing to call for immediate legislative action to establish stronger sentences and harsher punishments for men's violence towards women. It is imperative that our legal system reflects the seriousness of these crimes and provides justice for victims while deterring future offenders.
Violence against women is a global epidemic that necessitates urgent attention and action. Numerous cases across the world illustrate the horrifying reality many women face, and these tragedies underscore the need for reform in our judicial approach:
1. Rebecca Cheptegei (Uganda): Rebecca, a young athlete who represented her country in Olympics 2024 in Paris , was brutally attacked and set alight for dead by her former boyfriend. This sickening act has to be punished in full force. Other cases of female athletics murdered include Agnes Tirop 2021 and Damaris Mutua 2022.
2. The Kolkata Rape Case (India): In a shocking incident that garnered widespread outrage, a young woman was gang-raped and murdered in Kolkata. The slow judicial process and perceived inadequacies in sentencing have led to anger and frustration among citizens, highlighting the urgent need for reform to ensure justice is served.
3. Femicides in Mexico: The rise in femicides in Mexico, where women are murdered simply for being women, has sparked international outcry. The lack of stringent penalties for perpetrators has allowed this violence to continue unabated, demonstrating the need for more robust legal responses.
4. Sarah Everard (UK): The tragic case of Sarah Everard, who was kidnapped and murdered by a serving police officer, shook the nation and brought to light the systemic issues surrounding violence against women in the UK. The public's demand for justice and reform is stronger than ever.
5. Mahsa Amiri (Iran): The Mahsa Amini case in Iran sparked widespread protests after she died in police custody in September 2022 for allegedly violating the country's strict hijab laws. Her death highlighted systemic abuses, particularly against women, and ignited a movement calling for greater freedoms, rights, and an end to oppressive practices in Iran.
6. Saltanat Nukenova (Kazakhstan): a 31 year old woman in Kazakhstan, became a symbol of the fight against domestic violence after she was brutally murdered by her husband the former economy minister in 2023. Her tragic death sparked public outrage and calls for legal reforms to strengthen protections for women and combat gender-based violence in the country.
These cases are just a fraction of the countless stories of women who have suffered from violence. The current legal framework often fails to provide adequate protection and justice, leaving victims feeling vulnerable and unsupported.
To address this crisis, we propose the following actions:
1. Mandatory Minimum Sentences: Introduce mandatory minimum sentences for various forms of violence against women, ensuring that offenders face harsher consequences for their actions
2. Comprehensive Training for Law Enforcement: Implement training programs for police and judicial officials to enhance their understanding of gender-based violence and ensure sensitivity in handling such cases.
3. Support Services for Victims: Increase funding for support services for victims of violence, including legal assistance, financial support, counseling, and safe housing, to empower them to seek justice without fear.
4. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launch campaigns aimed at educating the public about the severity of violence against women and the importance of standing against it, fostering a culture of respect and equality.
We urge the UK Government to take these necessary steps to protect women and ensure that those who commit acts of violence are held accountable. We also urge the UK government work with other countries to protect women. It is time to send a clear message that violence against women is a serious crime that will be met with appropriate punishment.
