English:
The people of Europe call on the leaders of this continent to take immediate, decisive and coordinated action to slow the further spread of the Coronavirus. We call on you to:
- protect the health of all in Europe, in particular that of older people and those with fragile health and existing medical conditions, and to
- mitigate as much as possible the social and economic consequences of the pandemic in Europe and beyond.
Over the last couple of days and weeks, we have witnessed uncoordinated, unilateral and even openly selfish behaviour of some European governments, while the health systems in an increasing number of countries and regions threaten to collapse under the burden of skyrocketing numbers of patients. Very soon doctors will need to select those patients who will get proper treatment, and those patients who won’t. We have seen borders being closed without consultation, let alone coordination. And we have witnessed transport connections being interrupted unilaterally and goods including medical supplies being stopped.
But what we have not seen is a single coordinated offer of help towards the doctors and nurses who are currently fighting 24/7 against the disease in those regions particularly affected by the outbreak. What we have not seen either is a pan-European commitment to solidarity and support, a commitment to stand together in times of extreme need and to act as one European family.
We therefore ask the European leaders to:
- meet immediately and to decide together on a joint and comprehensive action plan for Europe;
- pool resources and provide concrete help and support for those regions and countries, which are particularly suffering in this crisis;
- task the European Commission with the implementation of the action plan and provide it with the necessary resources to do so;
- send a strong message to all European people that, while ‘social distancing’ is the order of the day for everyone and everywhere, standing together in solidarity is the best way to master this crisis.
