The Issue

Virtually all Canadians agree that animal abuse is wrong, and most Canadians do not wish to inflect harm on animals.

Virtually none of the animal exploitation that occurs in Canada (as well as in other countries) is occurring on the basis of survival necessity, meaning it is all completely unnecessary.

Most animals, including all those commonly used in agriculture, fishing, hunting, trapping, fashion, experimentation, and entertainment are sentient beings capable of a range of emotions and the ability to feel pain.

The Criminal Code of Canada supposedly prohibits anyone from willfully causing animals to suffer from neglect, pain, and injury.

Standard practices in agriculture, fishing, hunting, trapping, fashion, experimentation, and entertainment result in billions of sentient animals suffering unnecessarily every year.

These standard practices include forced artificial insemination, confinement, isolation, mutilations, overcrowded housing, unsanitary and unnatural living conditions, suffocation, forced behaviours, and premature death.

Inflicting harm or suffering on any sentient individual is an immoral act that has no place in a modern, civilized society.

Sentient animals should no longer be viewed as property but as individuals with rights.

Canadian values of anti-violence, anti-oppression, anti-animal abuse, and anti-discrimination do not reflect the way billions of animals are being used and treated in this country.

All animal abuse should be illegal.

We the undersigned call upon the Government of Canada to introduce a non-discriminatory Animal Bill of Rights for all sentient beings in the country.
