Save Devaraj market, one of the most active market's in Mysuru from demolition.
The Issue
Devaraja market and Lansdowne building is close to imminent demolition because local corporator's and bureaucrats choose to ignore the many many shopkeepers, users and shareholders in the future of Mysore's historical architecture. Many, many buildings can be affected by this demolition and fear because Mysore is a city in South India filled with heritage buildings.
The other name for Mysore thus has been rightly crowned "heritage city"
The future of this cities outlook and its future is at stake here and I urge people to see the light in which this beautiful building is. It is a building with many many users and their daily profession depends on it, as they live a day to day lives selling vegetables, groceries flowers etc. Lots of shopkeepers will fall into disaster if this happens and i urge you to see their plight and consider helping us out.
These two buildings house a lot of current shopkeepers whose daily lives depend on the same. It also is the light with which the city is seen ! The city looks the way it does because of its numerous heritage structures. That is its identity and lets not end up destroying it.
I urge the continuation of conservation in spite of this setback and -
To avoid panic reaction and understand the localized collapse that will not have a bearing on the rest of the heritage structure.
To come to terms with the fact that a potential large scale collapse and collateral damage may have been prevented, on a unsuspecting day.
To avail a technical audit of the safety of the entire Devraja Market Building and that of Lansdowne Building under restoration from NCSHS (National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures) of IIT Madras which is a specialized unit for such works only and not from any other organisation in mysore which can be influenced by local politicians. And afterwards continue with the best course of restoration possible with whatever can be restored. Because it can be and there are so many active users!
To limit the damage / loss of heritage and carry on with the restoration/conservation work confidently. Any number of audits and cross verification from experts from any where is welcome.
To tighten up the quality of workmanship, supervision and monitoring to ensure that no further calamity occurs.
To uphold the values and the principles of UNESCO and allow defeatist thoughts forces / thoughts to succumb to acts leading to mindless destruction of precious heritage, which will have telling negative impact on the society, esp in the case of heritage city of Mysore.
Please do take a few minutes of your time and let us make sure the conservation of the building continues...
