I support a Fossil Free VSC - let's bank ethically!

Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and residents of the wider Vermont State Colleges community:

Join Fossil Free VSC in calling upon the Vermont State Colleges System to take concrete steps to align its banking (and investing) with environmental and racial justice:

  1. Planet-friendly Banking: No banking with institutions that profit from climate and habitat destruction - as the VSC’s present bank, TD Bank, does. (For starters, the TD Group is invested in pipelines that carry dirty tar sands oil threatening to poison waterways, and that carry gas extracted through harmful fracking.)
  2. People-friendly Banking: No banking with institutions that profit from violations of the rights and interests of peoples - as the VSC’s present bank, TD Bank, does. (For starters, the TD Group is invested in the Dakota Access Pipeline, which violates rights of the Standing Rock Sioux under a treaty with the United States government.)

The VSC is currently - right now - considering debt restructuring options; so this is the time is to bring the ethical perspective into focus. Under the leadership of the Chancellor and Board of Trustees, the VSC can take a historic stand by accepting imperatives of environmental and racial justice as constraints on all debt-refinancing and all broader banking decisions.

This commitment would bring the VSC into fuller harmony with the spirit of Vermont’s greenhouse gas emission reduction goals for 2028, in particular, and Vermont's identity and values, more generally. A Fossil Free VSC would give our students, faculty, staff, and the wider Vermont State Colleges community a VSC in which to take even more pride!

Given the Federal resistance to regulation and greenhouse gas reduction, the struggle for climate justice is shifting to the banks fuelling climate destruction. Let's join the cities, institutions, and individuals sending the message to these banks: It is unacceptable to profit from climate destruction and racism

Add your voice - whether you're a student, alum, faculty, staff, or a part of the wider community connected to the Vermont State Colleges. Together, may we be all we can be as the VSC!
