TfL: Set affordable rents; don't force small businesses out of Hackney

The Issue

Small local employers that have been based in Hackney for years are being forced out of business by TfL.

Leonard Maloney employs his son and two other local mechanics at JC Motors in Stean Street, E8. They provide a great service and are a valued part of the community but TfL want to raise their annual rent from £22,000 to an astronomical and unaffordable £72,000 - £84,000. This is more than this business can possibly sustain; already many established tenants have had to move from the Haggerston railway arches.

TfL should assess the social and economic impact of its commercial decisions and set affordable rents for businesses like JC Motors which are a small but valuable part of the community.
