Support divesting Santa Monica City funds from Wells Fargo
This petition made change with 412 supporters!
On Tuesday, February 14, Santa Monica City Council will vote on a motion to consider divesting City funds from Wells Fargo for "their business practices and involvement in financing the Dakota Access Pipeline." Like Seattle and Davis before us, Santa Monica has an opportunity to lead in sustainable investment by removing its financial attachments to this dangerous and immoral pipeline. Please show your support by signing onto the following letter with your petition signature. We will submit this petition as a public comment to City Council before their meeting tomorrow. Share widely with Santa Monica residents!
Letter to City Council:
Dear Council Members,
We are writing today in support of Council Members O’Day and Vazquez’s motion to consider pulling city funds from Wells Fargo because of its lending practices and investment in the Dakota Access Pipeline. This project violates the sacred land and treaty rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and endangers the water supply and health for the Sioux and for countless others downstream.
Santa Monica has long been a leader in sustainability. To be a true leader in this field, we must embrace sustainability in all aspects of our community, including our investments. Let us take example from Seattle and Davis: divesting from banks involved with the Dakota Access Pipeline will show a strong commitment to protecting the environment, and stand as an important statement in support of the rights of indigenous peoples.
We hope that divestment from Wells Fargo would be the first step in Santa Monica’s divestment of the 17 banks involved in the Dakota Access Pipeline. We strongly support moving City money to a local credit union or community bank.
The City of Santa Monica should conduct its business with banks whose values align with our own and whose practices prioritize people and planet over profit. We urge you to vote in favor of investigating divestment from Wells Fargo.
