We present a Petition to Modify the Special Administrative Measures for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to allow extended family access to him.
The Issue
Dear Ms. Lynch,
We, the undersigned, from far and wide, are asking you to exercise your authority as the Attorney General of the US to modify the SAM's for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The recommendation is a slight modification for the purpose of communication with his paternal and maternal extended family, by phone and mail, and have visits from his extended relatives, including aunts, uncles and cousins.
We implore you to re-evaluate the original conditions of the SAMs, which were imposed through recommendations from the FBI and Carmen Ortiz, at a time in which the fear of inspiring other acts of terrorism was heightened due to a misconstrued position of notoriety.
22 months have passed since the original recommendations were acted upon. As the Attorney General, you should ask the question: "Do the reasons cited in the original set of recommendations still apply today, given the evidence presented in the guilt and sentencing phases of the hearing?
As the highest legal representative of the United States of America, you need to demonstrate sound judicial reasoning and re-evaluate such measures.
Particularly in light of exposed factors that no longer justify the reason behind the original decision to silence a young man and to cut off all ties with extended family and the public.
Furthermore, in light of the trial and findings in the trial: "Is this humane and just punishment?"
Thank you.
