It has been about two years since each of you had signed this petition to #SaveKBR, one of the most treasured green jewels of Hyderabad.
Thanks to your tremendous participation both online and on-ground, we flooded the central environment ministry with enough objections to support our claim of why KBR National park needs the entire walkway as it is to act as a buffer zone and protect the park. Voila! The ministry rightfully understood and declared that a public hearing to be conducted before the Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) is declared. We celebrated.
But little did we know, our fight had only begun! As we, the citizens, fought the battle silently and ethically following legal and civil protocols, the government slid through the back door, used the COVID-19 pretext to bypass a public hearing, and got an ESZ Notification that favoured construction of flyovers around the KBR National park by removing the walkway!!
The government claims to have conducted a public hearing, though they have not presented any reports on the same. They convinced the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) that the evidence was unavailable due to pandemic (recorded in the minutes of the 42nd meeting). It is strange that none of us, the actual stakeholders, more than 1crore citizens of Hyderabad, even got to know about such public hearing!!
New indian Express Article says that top officials acted cagey and evaded when asked about the Public Hearing.
The SRDP flyovers, which are proposed with a claim to reduce traffic congestion in the area, are not backed by any traffic studies or the Environment Impact Assessment report. Besides the 1800 trees that will get cut, the flyovers will destroy the KBR National Park over the next few years as pollution, noise and human intervention go amok within the main park.
It appears now that we have relaxed in an illusory celebration. It is time to wake-up and stay alert; to show that when our city is on fire, we will not stand and watch it burn. While a full-blown on-site protest may not be necessary right away, a public display of solidarity for the cause is required. To begin with,
Please Consider Changing your Social media profile name; especially on Twitter to “[Your name] for #SaveKBR” as a sign of dissent.
An email has been sent to MOEF to bring attention to the false claims of the government about the conduct of a public hearing in this matter. We may be too small individually, but collectively, we can succeed in saving the park, which is aptly called “Green Lungs of the City”.
Citizens for Hyderabad will use this petition to share updates on this subject and also small action points now and then as may be necessary to achieve our worthy goal.
Do follow the Twitter handle @CitizensforHyd and also tag it when you change your name, so that we can follow you too. Ideally, let us follow every one whose name has #SaveKBR as part of their social media name handle. This cause is not owned by a person or a group but by all concerned Hyderabadis; so do your bit…
