OPEN THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY AND CITY SHELTERS TO RECEIVE ANIMALS

OPEN THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY AND CITY SHELTERS TO RECEIVE ANIMALS
The Issue
The County and City Shelters of Los Angeles must open their doors to accept stray, owner surrender and lost cats and dogs. They cannot refuse to accept these animals. The shelters are operating with safe protocols, so there is no reason to turn away animals. Please join us in asking the shelters of Los Angeles to accept animals. The shelters will not be overburdened by continuing their normal practices of accepting dogs and cats as the adoption rate has only increased during this pandemic. People realize that pets make great companions and offer love and hope in a time of despair.
We know that keeping everyone safe during this pandemic is important. However, pets deserve to be safe as well. We are in the midst of kitten season; they do not know there is a pandemic. There are always lost and abandoned dogs and cats. The shelters are where they must go for the food and needed medical attention. Then they can be adopted into a new forever home. Tragically, in this time of Covid 19, there are thousands of people in the greater Los Angeles area that have lost their jobs. They can barely afford to care for themselves, let alone their pets. Moreover, numerous people are being hospitalized or otherwise can no longer care for their pets. The shelters will not take in these animals. Animals are literally being thrown into dumpsters, tied to streetlights, and otherwise abandoned to an inhumane fate. When stray cats and/or kittens are discovered, the County shelter's policy is to tell the person to return the animal where it was found. What if it was found in the middle of the street? What if it is a tiny helpless kitten?
The number of adoptions during this pandemic has been tremendous. This opens cages and creates space for animals that are relinquished or brought in as strays and/or found animals. Shelter budgets have not been reduced and there is sufficient personnel to care for these animals.
Shelters are asking rescues with limited resources to take the brunt of the kittens this kitten season without any medical or financial support. Yet, these animal care facilities still receive all their funding.
Please sign this petition and include your voice. Demand the shelters provide the essential services to which they are ethically and contractually obligated. The County and City Shelters of Los Angeles need to open their doors!
