To honour Private George Peachment VC,we call on Bury Council to name a road in his memory
The Issue
George Stanley Peachment was born at Parkhills, Fishpool, Bury, Lanchashire on 5th May 1897 and is Bury's only recipient of the Victoria Cross.
As a local lad he grew up to become an apprentice steam engine maker. Before his 18th Birthday he answered the call to arms in April 1915, to defend this nation in a dark time against a tyranny, he even gave a false age and joined the 6th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
Private George Peachment VC on 25th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos near Hulluch, France paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life to save his company commander.
His citation in the London Gazette reads:
For the most conspicuous bravery near Hulluch on 25th September 1915. During heavy fighting when our front line was compelled to retire in order to re-organise, Private Peachment seening his company commander, Captain Dubs, lying wounded, crawled to assist him. The enemy fire was intense, but through there was a shell hole quite close, in which a few men had taken cover. Private Peachment never thought of saving himself, he knelt in the open by his Officer and tired to help him, but while doing this he was first wounded by a bomb and a minute later mortally wounded by a rifle bullet. He was one of the youngest men in his battalion and gave this splendid example of courage and self-sacrifice.
Private George Stanley Peachment VC was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to the British Forces.
To honour and remember a local lad and Bury's only recipient of the Victoria Cross, we call on Bury Council to name a road after Private George Peachment VC so that his memory and sacrifice can be remembered.
