The Issue
- Dandelions are bees' first Spring food source.
- Chemicals on dandelions will be harmful to bees and possibly to children, who often pick dandelions, thinking they are flowers.
- We are adding bees to our school this Spring, and don't want them to be harmed by the use of weed killer.
- Last year, our entire pumpkin patch was killed out by the broadleaf weed killer that was spread on the LEAP school grounds. We weren't able to sell the pumpkins that we planted because of the weed killer used on the school property.
- The use of weed killer is very expensive! From June 2024 to November 2024, Watertown Unified School District spent $7,114.43 on weed killer. This total does not include the expense of staff or equipment to spread the weed killer.
