Brazil is home too 35.7 million
According to research estimates, the Brazilian pet market generated a revenue of BRL 15.2 billion in 2018, which was a 7.3% increase as compared to the data from 2017. This exhibits the popularity of pets in Brazil. It is the second largest country in the world in terms of dog population, with 35.7 million dogs calling Brazil their home today. About 50% of Brazilian households own a dog. The growth of a middle class population in the country, along with declining fertility rates and rising life expectancy, has led to an increased frequency for Brazilians to be seen adopting pets as their new family members.

Yet sadly, the general situation for street dogs in Brazil is a sad and complex situation. Brazil is a harsh environment for people and for animals. There are stray dogs everywhere. The local councils sometimes clean up by collecting and killing, and many people do not assume responsibility for their pets. They think that pet ownership means leaving a dog to roam the streets all day and put some leftover food scraps out at night. Medical treatment, vaccines, and spay or neuter are definitely not part of their agenda for their pet. So many are thrown out if they get pregnant, ill, or cause some type of inconvenience. Many are born in the streets and have never had homes. The average life of a street dog is around a year. Some get lucky and live a lot longer; others die quickly.

We ask that President Jair Bolsonaro to resolve the issues of lack of vaccinations, and fund more money for housing of the homeless dog situation there , such as shelters that is much needed!!

There is a lot of cruelty there with many dogs being poisoned, beaten, denied medical treatment, and intentionally run over. People put dogs in plastic bin liners and leave them tied up in the bag to be run over. So many see sick and dying dogs regularly, and witnesses many dying of distemper every year due to lack of vaccination. These street dogs are engaged in a serious battle for survival in which there are more losers than winners. The situation is heart breaking to any one that loves dogs.

In Fortaleza, Brazil, a population of 2.643 million (2018); with  11.4 % of homeless dogs in that region alone, and the number of vet's, pet hospitals or any veterinary help they have only 2.

As well, and unfortunately it's not uncommon for street dogs and cats to be killed before big international sporting events such as soccer events as a knee-jerk reaction to preparing cities for the global spotlight. But the world IS  watching!!

A 25 kg of Dog Food cost's approx. $15 for low grade kibble, that is not much to ask!

As there are many people going without to ensure that these beautiful animals are being fed and housed!
