This years Paralympics were incredible I don't believe anyone can doubt that. This year a few athletes from around the world have been excluded from competition after years of training for one reason. They have a named condition that under the International Paralympic Committee classification system is not a disability or a significant enough impairment. This condition is called Ehlers-Danlos, it is a rare connective tissue disorder that affects collagen it can cause; Joint hypermobility and joint dislocations, joint pain, extreme tiredness, digestive problems, increased heart rate, problems with internal organs the overall condition can have some very serious complications, it can be a real life changer. Depending on what type you have varies the condition greatly. I actually know a bit about this! My names Emily and i have just turned 16. I have Ehlers-Danlos Hyper mobility Type and the associate condition Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS). I also am a carer to my mum who has EDS-HT. I found out that having Ehlers-Danlos automatically excludes you from Paralympic classification without even being assed.
When reading about, I read of a story of a 13 year old boy in the Uk who has EDS-HT showed great promise in discus and shot put and was looking promising for 2020 Paralympic team. When getting put onto the training team for Para GB he was turned away for having EDS. He hasn't played sports since.
I want to change this! I would like you to please help support me and others by signing and sharing this petition to help raise support. I would like to give this petition to the International Paralympic committees classification coordinator, to signal that people do care and want things to change.
Thank you for taking your time to read. Please do sign this petition and hopefully help so many promising athletes do what the do best!
