Currently, front-line domestic violence services are chronically underfunded across the country.

The federal government last year spent over $42 billion on defense.

They plan to spend over $89 billion on submarines.

Last year, all governments and territories (federal and state) spent only $4.1 billion on frontline domestic violence services.

If there was a terrorist organization in Australia, that targeted Australian men, that killed one man a week, and physically, financially, psychologically, and socially abused thousands of others, then the federal government would put it front and center of their agenda.

This country would be on an emergency footing and there would be tens of billions of dollars being made available for those victims to escape the abuse and killings. It would be a national priority.

This is happening to Australian women, today, right this minute, right this second.

The greatest threat to women in this country does not come from a foreign power or a terrorist organization or anywhere else.

The greatest threat to Australian women’s safety comes from violent Australian men, often in our own homes.

Frontline domestic violence services are grossly underfunded in this country.

Thousands of calls to the 1800 Respect line go unanswered.

Getting a place in one of the shelters is like winning the lotto.

Managers of these shelters, when choosing who gets one of the rare places, often have to ask themselves “which one of these women is most likely to die tonight.”

It is the victim, overwhelmingly women, who always pay the price for the abuse.

She is the one who has to leave, often with small children.

She is the one who has to give up her job and leave her social network, her family her friends.

It is time the Federal government of this country stepped up to protect Australian women and properly fund all frontline domestic violence services.

We are calling for

1. A minimum of $10 billion in Federal funding for frontline domestic violence services to be made available this financial year, and every financial year, for the next five years. If the Federal government can spend $85 billion on submarines, they can afford to spend $10 billion annually on protecting 52% of this country’s population.

2. All state governments and territories to provide an online service where victims of domestic violence if they choose not to make a formal police complaint, can instead make an informal, anonymous online complaint. This would only be acted upon if the alleged offender repeats, and would give valuable information on informing strategies to reduce repeat offending and protect communities.

3. All schools in Australia to provide age-appropriate education on the red flags of domestic violence (including subjects like what coercive control looks like, gaslighting, minimization and more). This to be provided annually from a young age.
