Save Youth Sports in CT

The Issue

As representatives of youth sports in South Windsor, we fully support the current laws protecting children from concussion as well as some reasonable portions of proposed House Bill 7048 and Senate Bill 769.  However, these bills as written go too far in eliminating immunity from liability for coaches, league administrators, and the Town in addition to mandating requirements that are unenforceable.

Without this immunity, the CT Association of Municipal Attorneys has advised closing fields to all youth sports which would affect nearly 4,000 children in South Windsor alone.

We are asking lawmakers to table a vote and reconsider more reasonable language.  The law as written, especially the removal of immunity for volunteers and municipalities, is the antithesis to our current fight against childhood obesity.  We are asking our legislators to re-write the bills taking into consideration the significant burden placed on small volunteer organizations up to and including insolvency.
