Stop the tabloid frenzy and unethical reporting, and stop calling it news
The Issue
Plain and simple, biased reporting and unethical journalism practices are divisive. HLN is dividing America, with individuals like Jane Velez-Mitchell and (to a much larger degree) Nancy Grace peddling their opinions to all of America and masquerading them as "Headline News."
I, for one, feel like these people have done a disservice to America; with several high-profile cases in recent history, HLN has benefited from extremely high ratings to such a degree they even changed some of their daily programming. They're dwelling on the "sexy stories," and guess what, sex sells. They've donated all journalistic credibility, ethics, and any ethos surrounding those journalistic constants that are expected anywhere: truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability (thanks Wikipedia.) I say we tell Time Warner, Turner Broadcasting System, inc., Cable News Network, inc., and HLN to hold themselves and their reporters accountable. Nobody deserves a life of media frenzy, a life of media obsession, an invasion of privacy paraded throughout living rooms all over America, a public damning and life of humiliation perpetrated by "Newscasters." In America, we are innocent until proven guilty, and we have freedom of the press to protect us from the government; who will protect us from the press?
Trial by media in the age of constant 24 hour a day news coverage and smart phone accessed web 2.0 live streaming updates lead to a very dangerous situation. I feel that HLN is feeding a smoldering fire, and these reporting methods and sick obsessions by the newscasters are fueling a tinderbox of irresponsibility that will result in very, very horrible things.
