Make Texas Elector Voting Against Donald Trump Time's 2016 Person of the Year
The Issue
Christopher Suprun, a 9/11 first responder and US Presidential Elector for the State of Texas, published a New York Times OP-ED declaring that he will not be voting for Donald Trump on December 19, 2016.
Suprun's NYT OP-ED can be read in full here: http://nyti.ms/2g23Ut1
Suprun, who is already receiving death threats for his position, has demonstrated the calm courage under fire that true American leaders and heroes should have.
Time Magazine: Make Christopher Supurn 2016's Person of the Year.
Suprun's honesty and bravery has encouraged movements to elect alternative candidates for the US President on December 19, 2016. More information about these groups can be found by searching for #MoralElectors, and #HamiltonElectors.
Suprun explained his position by citing the US Constitution, The Federalist Papers, Donald Trump's inexperience, Trump's conflicts of interest, and the anti-democratic advisors Trump has pledged to take into the White House.
Courage, thoughtfulness, and a willingness to speak honest truth to power are values that we cherish in the United States, and no one in 2016 has demonstrated that better than Christopher Suprun.
Suprun is a long-time Republican who does not see the values of his party in this candidate: "I have poured countless hours into serving the party of Lincoln and electing its candidates. I will pour many more into being more faithful to my party than some in its leadership. But I owe no debt to a party. I owe a debt to my children to leave them a nation they can trust."
Suprun concluded his OP-ED with: "Fifteen years ago, I swore an oath to defend my country and Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. On Dec. 19, I will do it again."
Mr. Suprun will vote along with 537 other electors on December 19, 2016. The November US Presidential Election does not directly elect the president, it merely assigns electors who are often expected to elect the assigned candidate — but they are not expected to always do so. Electors have voted against their assigned candidates 157 times in US History.
As Suprun explains: "Federalist 68 argued that an Electoral College should determine if candidates are qualified, not engaged in demagogy, and independent from foreign influence."
Let us honor Suprun's bravery in the face of bigotry, anti-democratic ambitions by demagogues, misogyny, kleptocracy, prejudice, xenophobia, and inexperience in anything that qualifies you to rule the greatest nation on Earth.
